Respect Your Challenges And Don't Give Up - Part One

The first thing you have to accept when it comes to owning your own business from home is to respect the challenges you may face. Everyone is going to have different challenges so don't give up.

Passion? Passion!
One thing you have to know is if you have the passion for what you are doing you can do no wrong. Passion is the main reason you should start your own business in the first place. If you are in it for the money, I am sorry, it most likely will not work out in the long run. You will find yourself getting tired and bored and your brand will suffer. If you find yourself writing ideas at the dinner table once you think of them, working long hours on a new design of some sort just so you can spice up your brand, or  getting excited when looking up new programs and ways to grow your business, then guess what - YOU HAVE PASSION!

Distractions In Your Home
Working from home is an amazing accomplishment (that is before you leap into your own studio/shop outside your home but that's another story). You may come to some challenges with distractions. The Internet, television, cell phone apps, and so on, these things are great to build your business but just because you have them in full access 24/7 at your home doesn't mean you should actually use them. Remember, you are still at work regardless if you are your own boss. I personally still have a tad struggle when it comes to blogs. I continue reading and reading and the next thing I know it's been over an hour and I could have accomplished so much in that time. Let the people in your life understand your work hours, also. Most may assume since you work from home that you are available constantly. That is farthest from the truth. Find your routine and stick with it. Also, try treating yourself to breaks which leads me to my next point….

Breaks And Time Management
Breaks keep you refreshed for the day. Just as you would take a lunch break from the office, you should do the same for at home. Do not crunch everything all into one 'speedy' day. Take your time. Remember: the time invested is how much what you do is worth. Do not stress over time what-so-ever, that is a challenge you can manage but it is also a challenge that you can never get back. It is always better to get it done the "best" way rather than the "good" or "okay" way. It takes more time to redo something than it does to get it done right the first time. Just because you feel like it is taking forever don't give up! This is normal and before you know it, it will be like second nature to you.

UGH! Financing...
Money and financing can be a huge headache and can be very confusing for most. Trust me, I have never been good with numbers growing up and I am still not good with numbers today. Make sure you keep EVERY SINGLE RECEIPT. If you are filing taxes for the year, it is important that you have the papers on all of your supplies, gas, etc. to write off. If you purchase something online, print the receipt that was sent to your email. Keep an organized filing system. I have a monthly system going for the entire year. Do what makes since for you and what you can understand the best. Do not stress over filing taxes, that's why they invented people to do that for you ;-). Remember, you are the CEO of your business - take charge of your money and see the growth.

Aim High And Low
A goal is the fuel that keeps you alive with your brand. It is important to aim for short term goals and for long term goals. Get your notepad out and on one piece of paper section it off in 4 columns. The first column is TOMORROW. The next column is THIS WEEK. The third column is THIS MONTH. And finally the fourth column is THIS YEAR. Your ultimate goal maybe in 5 years have your own store front but you need to keep in-between the then and now fueled up with goals, goals, goals. What do you see yourself accomplishing tomorrow? Be honest with yourself and set something that will truly have you feeling satisfied. Continue on until you reach this years goal. By this time next year how would you like to view your brand? Don't let high goals stress you out. They are possible! Nothing is impossible! Don't ever give up!
